When I was a little girl, my family was preparing to move to the East Bay, and I discovered I would be changing schools mid-third grade. I suddenly had debilitating stomach aches that warranted enough attention to make my parents take me to the pediatric psychologist at our hospital. It didn’t take a lot for the doctor to determine that my body was reacting to the impending change, and advised me to draw a floor-plan of my new bedroom in our Danville house, to help me get used to the idea of this new change. My anxiety began to subside, and of course, everything turned out great. But the stomach aches still continued for me with every anxiety-provoking move in my life. Twenty years later and I’m still getting the stomach aches, this time paired with sleeplessness. So I decided to take that old advice and… draw a floor-plan of my new “home.” The stomach aches are subsiding a little bit, but I mostly can’t believe that this begins tomorrow.
